Nobody,
except perhaps the French, would dispute that English clockmakers led
the field in the 200 years from the invention of the pendulum around
1660. The dominant forms were the longcase clock and the spring-driven
bracket or mantel clock, with lesser examples such as wall clocks and
portable clocks.
